Japanese Christians in San Francisco organized a branch of the YMCA at 1409 Sutter Street. Kiyoshi Tomizawa became its secretary and led it for 21 years.サンフランシスコの日系キリスト者が、サター街1409番地にYMCAの分館を組織しました。主事となったキヨシ・トミザワは、21年にわたり会を導きました。

YMCA world leader John R. Mott promised $75,000 if the community raised as much. Japanese and American committee members posed on the steps of the old buildings on Buchanan Street, soon torn down to make way for the new Y.YMCA世界運動の指導者ジョン・R・モットは、地元で同額を集めれば7万5千ドルを寄付すると約束しました。日米の建設委員は、新会館のために取り壊されるブキャナン街の古い建物の階段に並びました。

Before the new building opened, the Y already had teams in tennis, baseball, basketball and football, a relay team at Kezar Stadium, and summer camp in the woods.新しい会館ができる前から、Yにはテニス、野球、バスケットボール、フットボールのチームがあり、ケザー・スタジアムを走るリレーチームや、森の中の夏のキャンプもありました。

The new building was dedicated. It had an 85-by-54-foot gym, clubrooms, a photo darkroom, a radio room and an outdoor archery range. Boys and men of every faith were welcome.新会館が開館しました。85×54フィートの体育館、クラブ室、写真暗室、ラジオ研究室、屋外の弓術場を備え、8歳以上の男子なら宗派を問わず歓迎されました。

After 21 years as secretary, Kiyoshi Tomizawa retired at 60. The Y filled its hall with long tables for his retirement dinner.21年間主事を務めたキヨシ・トミザワが60歳で退職しました。Yは退職感謝晩餐会のために会場いっぱいに長いテーブルを並べました。

Troop 12 turns ten第12隊、10周年
Troop 12 celebrated ten years. Many of its members also played basketball for the Y. Less than three months later came Pearl Harbor.第12隊が10周年を祝いました。隊員の多くはYのバスケットボールチームの選手でもありました。それから3か月足らずで真珠湾攻撃が起こります。

Under Civilian Exclusion Order No. 41, Japanese American families from more than 40 blocks of Japantown registered here. Each family got a number and luggage tags. On May 10, they left from the Y for the Tanforan Assembly Center.民間人立ち退き命令第41号により、日本町40余区画の日系人家族はここで登録を命じられました。家族ごとに番号と荷札が渡され、5月10日、人々はこのYからタンフォラン集合所へ送られました。

The building, used by the USO during the war, returned to the Y. Nisei veterans of the 442nd, the 100th Battalion and the MIS found the gym open to them, and an all-Nisei basketball league began. One player remembered: “We were able to forget the past (for now) and move forward.”戦時中USOが使っていた建物がYに戻りました。第442連隊、第100大隊、MISから帰った二世の復員兵に体育館が開かれ、二世のバスケットボールリーグが始まりました。ある選手は「過去を(ひとまず)忘れ、前へ進むことができた」と振り返ります。

Now the Buchanan Street YMCA and YWCA, it served Japanese American, Black and other families under one board. At the Hobo Banquet, 150 children and adults of all races ate watered soup to raise money for the hungry in 26 countries.ブキャナン街YMCA・YWCAとなり、一つの理事会のもとで日系、黒人、そしてさまざまな家族を迎えました。「ホーボー晩餐会」では、あらゆる人種の子どもと大人150人が薄いスープを食べ、26か国の飢えた人々のために募金しました。

Ten boys aged 15 to 18 from San Francisco YMCAs traveled to Osaka, San Francisco’s sister city, in the first YMCA “Home to Home” youth exchange.サンフランシスコのYMCAから15〜18歳の少年10人が、姉妹都市・大阪を訪れました。YMCA初の「ホーム・トゥ・ホーム」青少年交流です。

The membership drive会員募集キャンペーン
Teams named for the S.F. Giants, Warriors and 49ers raced to raise $4,000 in memberships. The next year’s goal: 1,000 members.S.F.ジャイアンツ、ウォリアーズ、49ersの名を冠したチームが、会費4千ドルを目標に競いました。翌年の目標は会員1,000人でした。

Under Yori Wada, the Y kept its doors open. Troop 12 played its home games in the gym, and girls’ clubs like Les Jeunes Filles, the Darnelles and the Enchantees held dances, shows and classes.ヨリ・ワダのもと、Yの扉はいつも開かれていました。ボーイスカウト第12隊は体育館でホームゲームを行い、レ・ジューヌ・フィーユ、ダーネルズ、エンチャンティーズなどの少女クラブがダンスやショー、教室を開きました。

Seventy-one years after families waited here with their luggage, the gym filled again, this time around dinner tables.荷物を手に家族が待たされてから71年。同じ体育館が、今度は食卓を囲む人々でいっぱいになりました。
